The Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness, Life, Memories

Finally, a reason to be happy! This Saturday, 20 March, we celebrate International Day of Happiness. The United Nations first introduced the concept in 2013 to recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

We asked five of the smiliest and outwardly happy Ballarat business ladies to share some happiness insights with us to mark the occasion.

Kristy Tippett | Soho Rose Farm

What does happiness mean for you?

To me, happiness is a sense of both the feeling of contentment and joy. The kind you get on a Sunday afternoon with the kids playing in the backyard, after ticking off the weekend jobs in the sunshine and cooking a yummy Sunday roast.

What is one of your happiest memories?

When my daughters met their little brother for the first time. A memory filled with much love and excitement with a sense of contentment that our family were all together safely.

What are you excited, happy, and enjoying the most in life right now?

I am excited about our business’s future, so proud and happy at how far we have come in a short time. I am also really enjoying our children growing up and becoming their own people, it’s exciting, challenging and really, really fun.

What does happiness mean for you?

Happiness is a sense of feeling, love, connection and purpose.  It’s when I have the things that matter so much to me in my life more present than the things that don’t.  Happiness is better shared with people I love. I am the ultimate giver, I live for surprising people, and I am the chief social connector, always making sure our family and friends are catching up sharing a meal. I love making others happy in life and in business. Happiness for me is also when I have a purpose in my life that contributes to a cause and gives back.

I feel the most sense of happiness when my little family surrounds me. Seeing children grow and navigate life is a joy to watch and be a part of.  Any moment I get to infuse my children and husband with my love of spontaneity, adventures, and nature is like sunshine to me.

What activity or hobby do you feel happiest doing?

Anything that involves nature. Whether it is my hands in the soil, camping, swimming in the ocean, watching a sunset, or walking in the bush, you will see me with a smile on my face.  It’s the smell. The crisp fresh air just makes me feel good.  It’s my happy place to go to, and it’s the place I go to when I feel unhappy or stressed. It brings me back. Right now I am loving learning more about propagation. I’m a forever life learner and love learning new things.  Who doesn’t get happy when you see a new plant baby take off?

What are you excited, happy and enjoying the most in life right now?

This year feels hugely optimistic. Last year I put life into perspective to appreciate the little things more and go after what I want from life.  Right now, I have an incredible opportunity to chase the things that I have been dreaming of in my working career.  After a decade of tremendous hard work building the business’s foundations, I can finally move more into my creative zone and do what I do best.  It’s a real pinch-me moment.  I am so grateful to have a brand that is loved by so many.  We are launching so many exciting things this year, and I am so excited!

What does happiness mean for you?

I feel thankful for all that I have in my life: family and friends, my home, my business, my creative interests. To me, that is my ultimate happiness. I faced various adversities in my younger years, and the result of this made me appreciate and find great joy and happiness in the small everyday moments of my life. I am making the most of every day, here and now.

What is one of your happiest memories?

The joy and freedom I experienced with being a kid. I have very fond memories of being a child. I grew up at the beach and rode my bike a lot on adventures. I also really loved making things. It means that sometimes as an adult, I will say I am like a big kid as I love all the same things now and am very nostalgic.

What activity or hobby do you feel happiest doing?

When I’m designing, making and creating things, I love all sorts of crafts and have a varied and multi-disciplined background. Working with my hands brings me great joy and satisfaction, and I particularly love working with colour.

What is one of your happiest memories?

It probably sounds like such a typical answer to this question, but for sure, my happiest memories are when my kids were born. We didn’t find out what sex we were having, and I can still hear someone yelling out with my firstborn, “It’s a boy!” And then, with my second baby, “It’s a girl!”

What activity or hobby do you feel happiest doing?

Ooh, that’s a tough one, so many! My most recent one was last summer at our favourite beach holiday spot and walking around the headland with my daughter looking out to the wild ocean. I’m at my happiest when I can see the ocean.

What are you excited, happy, and enjoying the most in life right now?

Another summer-related one! Drinking GIN!! I’ve loved sampling all the fantastic Australian gins over the summer holidays. They’ve awakened my taste buds!

What is one of your happiest memories?

Weekends down at my Aunty & Bepa’s (Grandpa) house with mum when I was about 10.  We would have a sewing marathon all weekend where they would sew and teach me. They would always encourage my terrible sewing. Most memorable was the shorts with a seam right up the middle, making it impossible to walk.  Saturday evening was always a tasty dinner, followed by two episodes of The Bill.

What activity or hobby do you feel happiest doing?

I love being in the kitchen and getting creative with my art, but I would have to say driving! I love heading off for a long drive through different landscapes. It completely empties my mind and inspires my ideas and creativity to start churning.

What are you excited, happy, and enjoying the most in life right now?

I love the change of season. Autumn is arresting in Buninyong. The colours and scents in the air are incredible.  At the moment, my work at Saltbush involves working with a few other creatives to develop some product concepts. I love collaborating and seeing where our combined creativity leads, this process makes me happy, and it’s something I look forward to each week.
